History: Jacob Stamm laid out a cemetery on part of his land near the Susquehanna River, creating 35 burial lots, which he sold to purchasers. The cemetery was surveyed by John L. Eckel on 17 Sep 1883. The cost of a full lot was $12.00. Jacob Stamm's property was sold at sheriff's sale to David L. Miller on 22 Nov 1890, but he was able to get the cemetery back and it was conveyed to William W. Smithon 12 August 1892. As of May 1956, Lewis C. Wilson was the caretaker of the cemetery. At one point, it appears that the cemetery was fenced with a gate, but only some portions of the post fence remain along the back of the cemetery, along the woods. Jacob Stamm also deeded land for the Ebenezer Evangelical Church, which was built next to the cemetery site in 1874. It burned down in 1894 but was rebuilt. Eventually, it was closed and the building materials were removed to Sunbury, PA. Stamm Cemetery has also been called Ebenezer Cemetery or Mound Cemetery. The cemetery is well-maintained but receives few new burials. Many unmarked graves were obtained from information provided by Lewis C. Wilson to the DAR in 1956. |
