History: While out picking Ginseng near the “Bald Spot” on the mountain above Youngdale in August, 1939, Hallie Simcox discovered an ancient tombstone. The triangular stone was inscribed simply with a sunflower and the date 1710. At the time of its discovery, it was speculated that the stone marked the grave of a trader enroute to Fort Niagara at that very early day before this area was permanently settled. The sunflower has been used in Roman Catholic grave iconography to denote the faithful responding to God’s grace. It is not currently known what became of this gravestone, nor is the exact site marked today. |
